Compeer Seeks Local Volunteers

Compeer Lancaster is seeking volunteers to provide friendship to people who are recovering from mental illness.

Volunteer training is held monthly, with the next session scheduled for Tuesday, Oct. 13, from 6 to 9 p.m. at 630 Janet Ave., Lancaster. The training is free.

The Compeer program has been bringing people together in friendship since 1973 when it began in Rochester, N.Y. Compeer Lancaster began in 2001 and has made 167 friendship matches since then. Currently there are 68 active matches, with participants partaking in such activities as going to movies, watching sports, playing board games, dining out, hiking, visiting the library and more. Volunteers are matched with their same-gender friends based on age, geographic location and mutual interests.
