Community Calendar


The Community Calendar is a weekly feature of the Community Courier.

Local clubs, civic organizations, nonprofit agencies, schools, etc., that would like to have events or meeting date information published, should contact the Community Courier in writing at least two weeks before the event. No items will be accepted over the phone.

To Meet

Neighbors Caring and Sharing, a women's group that meets weekly to enjoy prayer, fellowship and a guest speaker, will meet on Tuesday, Oct. 6, from 9:15 to 11 a.m. at Conestoga Mennonite Church, located on Route 23 just west of Morgantown. Group Plans Meeting

The American Business Women's Association (ABWA), Berkshire Charter Chapter, will meet on Tuesday, Oct. 6, at 5:30 p.m. at Chef Alan's American Bistro in West Reading. "Stress Reduction at Work and at Home" will be presented by Brad Hahn

Senior Citizens

Meeting Planned

Honey Brook Senior Citizens will meet on Thursday, Oct. 8, at 11:45 a.m. at the Honey Brook Presbyterian Church. Each person is asked to bring a covered dish and a friend. The one who brings the most new members will win a gift certificate to Shady Maple.

Tickets will also be available at the meeting for the holiday banquet to be held on Thursday, Nov. 12, at the White Horse Fire Company. The Tel Hai Line Dancers will provide entertainment.

Church Plans

Fall Festival

Living God Lutheran Church, located on Route 322 just east of Honey Brook, will hold its 13th annual Fall Festival on Saturday, Oct. 10, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Featured will be a huge yard sale, a chicken corn soup sale, a baked goods table and a silent auction. There will also be a children's corner featuring spin art and face painting. All are welcome..

Bird Walk Slated

At Longwood Gardens

A bird walk will be held on Saturday, Oct. 10, from 9 a.m. to noon at Longwood Gardens in Kennett Square. Attendees will meet at the Visitor Center. The walk will focus on fall migrants and hawks. In addition to the main garden areas, the group will have access to areas not open to the public. Participants should wear comfortable hiking shoes and bring binoculars if they have them. (There will be some binoculars on hand for those who don't have them). The walk is free with admission. For more information, contact Larry at 484-340-7672.

Flea Market

St. Peter United Church of Christ, Route 23, Knauertown, will sponsor a flea market on Saturday, Oct. 10, from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. A donation will be requested from vendors for an outdoor space. Breakfast and lunch will also be available inside the church. All are welcome.

Basket Bingo

The Honey Brook Angels 3-Day Breast Cancer Walk group will hold a basket bingo to benefit the Susan G. Koman for the Cure Fund on Sunday, Oct. 11, at the Honey Brook Lions Center, 14 Mt. Pleasant Road, located just off Route 10. Doors will open at 1 p.m.; games will start at 2 p.m.

A sandwich, drink, dessert and chips will be included in the ticket price. For more information or tickets, call Dawn at 484-459-5086.

Buddy Walk

The 2009 Buddy Walk to help support people and their families who know and love someone with Down Syndrome will be held on Sunday, Oct. 11, from 1 to 4 p.m. at West Goshen Park in West Chester. For more information, visit www.ccdsig.org.

Women's Club

To Meet

The Honey Brook Women's Club will meet on Wednesday, Oct. 14, at 7 p.m. in the Honey Brook Presbyterian Church. Mary Thompson will present a program on stress. Attendees are asked to bring a baby picture for the Christmas Cookie List. Each member is also asked to bring an item for Steeple to People Ministries. For October, the ministry is collecting rice and beans.

Canal Program Set

At Boone Library

The Friends of the Girard Canal will hold a free slide show presentation by Larry Whyte, "The Schuylkill Navigation: A Journey on the Historic 19th Century Waterway" on Friday, Oct. 16, at 7 p.m. at the Boone Area Library, 129 N. Mill St., Birdsboro.

The Friends of the Girard Canal is a group of individuals who are interested in preserving, conserving and protecting the remains of the Schuylkill Navigations Girard Canal in Berks County. Built in 1824, The Girard Canal was a 22-mile stretch of waterway, locks, dams and slackwater pools which ran from Big Reading Dam to Parkerford, Montgomery County. It was used to carry coal and other materials from Port Carbon to Philadelphia.

Victorian Tea

The Friends of the Village Library are sponsoring a Victorian Tea on Sunday, Oct. 18, at 4 p.m. The tea will be held at St. Thomas Church on Route 10 in Morgantown. Tickets are available at the Village Library. They must be purchased in advance by Wednesday, Oct. 14.

Proceeds from the event will be used to benefit the Village Library. For more information, call the library at 610-286-1022.

Halloween

Parade Planned

The Honey Brook Halloween Parade, sponsored by Honey Brook Lions Club, will be held on Monday, Oct. 26, with a rain date of Tuesday, Oct. 27. Lineup will be at 6 p.m. at Schnure's Manufacturing on Suplee Road. Children up to age 6 will line up at the Honey Brook Presbyterian Church parking lot on Route 322. The parade will start at 7 p.m. Refreshments and prizes will be offered at the Honey Brook Fire Hall following the parade.

Yoga Classes

Offered

"Introduction to Yoga" classes are being held every Wednesday and Friday morning from 8:30 to 9:30 a.m. at the Village Library of Morgantown, 207 N. Walnut St., Morgantown. The drop-in classes are being held now though the end of November.

Attendees are asked to wear comfortable, stretchy clothing, and bring a yoga mat if they have one. A donation is charged per session. All proceeds will benefit the library.

Crafters

Needed

Crafters are needed for Living God Lutheran Church's annual Christmas bazaar to be held on Saturday, Nov. 14, from 9 a.m. 3 p.m. To rent a table, call Donna Lewis at 610-273-9383. The church is located at 3200 Horseshoe Pike, Honey Brook, next to the Heatherwood Retirement Community on Route 322.

Library Open

For Research

The Tri-County Heritage Society Library, 4979 N. Twin Valley Road, Elverson, is open every Tuesday from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. The society keeps a variety of documents on hand in its library, including cemetery records, funeral director ledgers, family genealogy files, maps, photographs, and tax and census records. Members of the society can visit the library for free, while nonmembers willl be charged a nominal fee.
