Library And SIFE Partner To Offer Job Seminar

By Krista Hurley

Elizabethtown College Students in Free Enterprise (SIFE) and the Elizabethtown Public Library have teamed up to offer a seminar titled Get Smart About Getting a Job.

Individuals age 16 and older may attend the seminar on either Monday, Oct. 19, or Wednesday, Oct. 21, from 5:30 to 8 p.m. both days. Both seminars will be exactly the same, said Amy Smith, vice president of SIFE and a senior at Elizabethtown College.

“(SIFE’s) mission is to identify needs and create sustainable solutions,” she explained, adding that unemployment and job searching are areas that SIFE wanted to address.

SIFE had worked with Bethleen Bradford, the library’s outreach services coordinator, on a project several years ago. When SIFE came up with the current idea for the seminar, the organization presented it to the library. Bradford was receptive to the idea, and the library agreed to partner with SIFE.

Get Smart About Getting a Job will focus on many aspects of job searching, including resume writing and the interviewing process. Smith noted that attendees may bring their resumes to be looked over during the seminar.

Each seminar will begin with an introduction of the speakers. Carolyn Haskell, director of human resources at a local company, is on the SIFE business advisory board. Robert William is the director for international student services/program manager for a study-abroad program. He has been a career development specialist at Harrisburg Area Community College and has served as executive editor and managing editor for publications related to labor-management and careers. Elizabethtown College’s Career Services will also be involved, conducting mock interviews. According to Smith, Career Services gave SIFE many resources as the organization was planning the seminars.

A total of 45 minutes will then be devoted to writing resumes, and there will be a time for questions to be answered. The subject of interviewing will cover 45 minutes as well, and those who have questions may ask them. Smith said that a new method of interviewing will be discussed during this time. Following this session, there will be a break. Individuals may visit the library’s coffee shop for beverages and cookies.

When the seminar reconvenes after the break, mock interviews by trained assistants from Career Services will be held. Attendees will choose one of four different jobs and will then have a bit of time to become acquainted with their selected type of job. After the interview takes place, each attendee will receive an individualized written evaluation of the interview so that he or she can determine what went well and what should be improved.

“If we can get one person who gets a job from this, that would mean the world to me,” Smith said, adding that the seminars will be helpful to those who attend. She continued, “We are trying to get a big turnout.”

The seminars will take place on the lower level of the library, 10 S. Market St., Elizabethtown.

While the event will be held entirely at no cost, space is limited for each seminar. “Registration is strongly recommended (to ensure a spot),” Bradford noted. Individuals who wish to attend should preregister by Friday, Oct. 16, by stopping by the library or calling the library at 367-7467, ext. 21.

For more information on the seminars, readers may e-mail information@etownpubliclibrary.org or sife@etown.edu .

On Tuesdays from 8 to 10 a.m. on the library’s main level, SIFE volunteers will be available to work one-on-one to offer step-by-step assistance with resumes, job and school applications, and job searches.

“SIFE is reliable, and they’re good to help,” Bradford noted. “I’ve been very impressed with the programs (the library has) done with SIFE.”

Smith added, “The main goal of everything is to help the community.”
