Oldies Concerts Will Benefit Library ![]() Photo by Rick Hiduk By Rick Hiduk Residents of the Hellam area and beyond are encouraged to put on their dancing shoes and brush up on the Jitterbug, the Twist, and the Hustle. Two dance parties slated for Sunday, Oct. 25, at the Hellam Fire Company, 163 E. Market St., Hallam, will benefit the Kreutz Creek Valley Library (KCVL) and other local charities. Kerry White and the Peanut Gallery will perform hits from the '40s to the '70s. White is a social studies teacher at Eastern York High School and once fronted a local band called the Vitlins. The new band has been rehearsing at Faith United Methodist Church in Hallam, where several of the musicians are parishioners. In addition to Kerry, musicians and vocalists include Bill Olewiler, Bill Dunlap, Mike Hubler, Christin Martinick, Kelsie Parrish, Kara Lacates, and Kris Firman. Joe Bachman of Faith UMC coordinated the program to support KCVL. He has been instrumental in organizing a variety of musicals programs and mystery dinner theater fundraisers for the church, even though he says he cannot dance or sing. According to KCVL branch manager Susan Nenstiel, Bachman stopped by the library on a day when things weren't going particularly well and shared with her his idea for the dance party . "When he told us what he wanted to do, it really brightened our day," Nenstiel recalled. "We're really pleased that there is a group of people willing to do this for the library." She steered him toward the Friends of the Kreutz Creek Valley Library group, the members of which were equally impressed with Bachman's idea for a fundraiser. In a recent newsletter, Friends member Betty Bell summed up both the need for additional funding for the library in the face of state budget cuts, as well as the group's gratitude for Bachman's efforts. "Now, more than ever, we will have to work harder to keep things afloat," she stated. "It was exciting to learn that Joe is willing to help." Nenstiel noted that the Friends group is responsible for raising at least 30 percent of the library's budget. "Book sales and bake sales only go so far," she remarked. "Having some extra income really helps us to make ends meet." People who have stopped by the library to purchase tickets are enthusiastic about the performances by White and the Peanut Gallery, which will start at 2 and 7 p.m. on Oct. 25. "People have been telling us how much they are looking forward to the event. (White) is quite popular as a singer. People get excited when his name is mentioned," Nenstiel related. "It's going to be a very enjoyable program, and I'm very anxious to attend." Although she admits that she's not much of a dancer, Nenstiel added, "My feet will be tapping." Interested readers may purchase tickets at the library, 66 Walnut Springs Road, Hellam Township, or by calling Faith UMC at 755-3155. KCVL is open Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.; Tuesdays and Thursdays from noon to 8 p.m.; and Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Columbia-Wrightsville Merchandiser - 10/14/2009 East York Community Courier - 10/21/2009 |
