St. Anne Hosts Training Session ![]() Police Chief David Spotts (left) shows George Giangi (center) and Chris Kennedy the new checklist for improving school readiness.
St. Anne School recently hosted a vulnerability assessment training session for four local school districts and two private schools. Sponsored by the Lancaster-Lebanon Intermediate Unit 13 (IU13), the training session involved 16 officials from the Lampeter-Strasburg, Solanco, Penn Manor and Manheim Central school districts, along with administrators from Conestoga Christian School and St. Anne School. Members of the South Central PA Task Force trained the school administrators in how to protect their schools from natural and manmade disasters and how to recover from them when they occur. After the classroom portion of the training, school administrators received on-the-job training by breaking up into teams and performing an assessment on St. Anne School. The trainers included George Giangi, chairman for business, industry and infrastructure of the South Central Task Force; Trooper Shawn Mell of the Pennsylvania State Police; and David Spotts, chief of police for Mechanicsburg. The program was funded by the U.S. Department of Education through a Readiness and Emergency Management for Schools (REMS) grant to IU13. Organized by Sandy Strunk at IU13, this training represents just one piece of the REMS grant program being administered by IU13, which supports efforts by schools to create, strengthen, and improve emergency management plans at both the district and building levels. This includes training school personnel on emergency management procedures, communicating with parents about emergency plans and procedures, and coordinating with local law enforcement, public safety or emergency management officials. Additional training sessions will be held over the next 14 months for 10 public school districts, four private schools and the county's Career and Technology Center, which are participating in the grant.
