After spending 10 years at a location on the Elizabethtown Center Square, Cornerstone Community Ministries moved to its new location, 95 S. Wilson Ave., Elizabethtown, over one year ago. Since the move, Cornerstone has completed small-scale renovations on the building and has plans to make large-scale renovations in order to complete the transformation of the warehouse into a youth center.

Because of this, Cornerstone has scheduled an open house for Saturday, Nov. 7, from 5 to 8 p.m. The public is invited to attend the free event.

“We want to show people where we’re at in the process (of renovating),” explained John Myers, Cornerstone’s executive director. “It’s not just for people who already support us; it’s for people who don’t know (about) us.”

At the open house, board members and volunteers will give brief tours of the facility. The drawings of the organization’s future plans will be available. Myers explained, “It’s just so people can see in detail what we hope to do.” Refreshments will be provided by Cornerstone’s cooking club, and attendees will be able to place orders for poinsettias.

“We hope to show our newly donated van,” Myers noted. The van will be used for picking youths up after school and for taking the organization’s basketball team on trips.

During the event, youths will demonstrate the facilities by playing video games and making use of some of Cornerstone’s other opportunities and amenities, such as the new skateboard ramps.

“That’s been a really exciting addition,” said Myers of the ramps. Future plans will involve completing the skatepark and basketball areas. Cornerstone also plans to create a grand entrance, double the size of the kitchen, and build a second story onto the current entry room.

Currently, the facility offers pool tables, pingpong, foosball, video games, and board games, as well as basketball and skateboarding. Cornerstone is open from 7 to 9 p.m. on Mondays for a Bible study and free time. On Tuesdays and Thursdays from 3 to 5 p.m., students from Elizabethtown College offer homework help, and youths may play games and use the skatepark. The cooking club meets on Wednesdays from 6 to 8 p.m. From 7 to 10 p.m. on Fridays, the entire building is open for free time, while on Saturdays from 1 to 3 p.m., the building is open for skateboarding only. There are also other opportunities as well. For example, Myers said, a video production class was held and is currently wrapping up.

“We want people to get behind us and support us,” Myers noted. “I hope everyone can have a sense of ownership because the youths that come here are a part of this community.”

“We’d love to see 500 people here (at the open house) throughout the night,” he continued. Those who wish to attend do not need to preregister. There will be parking attendants to direct individuals to the stone parking lot at the end of the building.
