Students Merit National Awards ![]() The National Merit Scholarship Program recognized 13 seniors at Devon Preparatory School. Thirteen seniors at Devon Preparatory School, nearly one-quarter of the class, were recognized recently by the 2010 National Merit Scholarship Program. Nine of these students were named semifinalists, and four were named Commended Students. The semifinalists are Matthew C. Gruchacz of Conshohocken, Shane J. Howard of Folsom, Theodore J. Lawrence of Collegeville, Samuel P. Parkinson of Springfield, Andrew L. Robie of Havertown, Robert M. Smith of North Wales, Daniel H. Stack of Broomall, Joseph A. Stucynski of Malvern and Francisco F. Suero of Broomall. The Commended Students are Andrew E. Callahan of West Chester, Patrick W. Henry of Newtown Square, Philip J. Nowlan of Ardmore and Patrick F. O'Brien of Malvern. The National Merit Scholarship Program is an annual academic competition for recognition and scholarships. More than 1.5 million students in over 22,000 U.S. high schools entered the program by taking the Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT). The semifinalists are among the 16,000 students who are the highest-scoring entrants in each state. Semifinalists are the only participants who qualify to continue in the competition for National Merit Scholarships. Scholarship winners will be named in 2010. The Commended Students are among 34,000 of the approximately 50,000 high scorers on the PSAT/NMSQT. Devon Prep is a private, Catholic college preparatory school for young men in grades six to 12 conducted by the Piarist Fathers. The school, located on a 20-acre campus in Devon, enrolls nearly 300 students who hail from Chester, Delaware and Montgomery counties as well as parts of Philadelphia.
