On Sunday, Feb. 28, the third seminar organized by the Central Pennsylvania Chapter of the Emerging Scholars Network (ESN) will take place at Elizabethtown Brethren in Christ (BIC) Church, 996 E. High St.

Don Kraybill, distinguished college professor and Senior Fellow in the Young Center for Anabaptist and Pietist Studies at Elizabethtown College, will present several free programs.

During the 8:30 and 11 a.m. worship services, Kraybill will preach on “Jesus’ Upside-Down Kingdom,” a topic based on his book “The Upside Down Kingdom.” “The Riddle of Amish Culture,” from Kraybill’s book by the same name, will be the focus of the adult elective time, which will take place from 10 to 10:45 a.m. According to Kraybill, the Amish population doubles every 20 years. He will explain how the Amish lifestyle thrives instead of being “assimilated into modernity.” The program will also show how the practices of the Amish rest heavily on their religious foundation.

From 12:30 to 2 p.m., a luncheon will be held at the church. While there will be no set fee for the meal, a freewill offering will be received.

During this time, Kraybill will present on “The Sociology of Faith: An Autobiographical Story.”

“Each academic discipline raises different questions for (Christians who are involved in those disciplines),” he explained. “I’ll be talking about some of the issues I’ve struggled with as a Christian and as a sociologist (and about) the ways that I, as a Christian, can teach sociology.” He added that he will focus on ways that individuals can work through issues such as the ones he experienced.

“There will not be a final exam, so feel free to come,” Kraybill joked.

The public is invited to attend any of the programs. Preregistration is not required to attend the adult elective or the sermons, but those who wish to attend the luncheon must register by Sunday, Feb. 21. Registration may be made by visiting www.etownbic.org/kraybill or by calling the church office at 367-2651.

The local chapter of ESN and Elizabethtown BIC have partnered twice before to organize seminars. The next seminar, to be held at the church on Sunday, Sept. 26, will feature Dennis Hollinger, the president and professor of Christian ethics at Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary, who will focus on ethics.

“This is a brand-new partnership,” said Elizabethtown BIC pastor Steve Lane of how the local chapter and the church have been working together. “This is a pioneering effort.”

ESN is a nationwide organization linked to Intervarsity Christian Fellowship. According to its Web site, www.emergingscholars.org, ESN seeks “to identify, encourage, and equip the next generation of Christian scholars who seek to be a redeeming influence within higher education.”

“It’s a great goal,” said Tom Grosh, who works with Intervarsity’s graduate and faculty ministry. “So how do you make that practical?” His and Lane’s answer to that question was to schedule seminars featuring individuals who have successfully incorporated their academic disciplines and their Christian faith.

Grosh noted that there is often tension between being a scholar and being a Christian. “Part of our goal is to break that down,” he acknowledged.
