Events Will Mark Read Across America

The Bradford Heights Elementary School Home and School Association will hold its second annual used book sale on Friday, March 5, from 5 to 8 p.m. and on Saturday, March 6, from 9 a.m. to noon. The event will conclude with a bag sale from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. on Saturday, when shoppers may fill a grocery bag full of books for a nominal fee.

The sale will take place in the gymnasium at Bradford Heights, located at 1331 Romig Road, Downingtown. Items for sale will include gently used books for children and adults in hardcover and paperback, DVDs, videos, puzzles and various board/computer games. All of the proceeds from the used book sale will directly support various educational programs and services for Bradford Heights Elementary School students.

In preparation for the event, members of the Home and School Association have been collecting gently used books from the school community. Thus far, over 10,000 books have been donated for the sale.

"We are in the process of sorting the books," said book sale committee chair Maria Smith. "The children's books will be sorted into early reader, chapterbooks, board books, pop-ups and more. Adult books will be sorted not only by softcover and hardcover, fiction and nonfiction, but into further subcategories like horror, romance, thriller and mystery. We will also have a travel section and a self-help section."

All books will be reasonably priced. "The whole purpose is to promote reading not only to our school students, but (also to) the community," Smith said. She noted that last year’s sale was a great success, and that leftover books were given to various charities. "The school earned over $2,000 to put toward educational programming for our students," she said.

Each Bradford Heights student will also receive a free softcover book from the used book sale, thanks to local business owner Wendy Provencher, this year's used book sale sponsor. "They can pick out (the book) themselves, so it is something they want to read," Smith said.

The book sale is part of the school's celebration of the National Education Association's Read Across America week, which will begin nationally on Tuesday, March 2. The event coincides with the birthday of well-known children's author “Dr. Seuss."

Bradford Heights students will participate in reading activities during the week. One special event for the students will be a special Read Across America assembly on Friday, March 5. The assembly will feature guest speakers, including Dr. Lawrence J. Mussoline, Downingtown Area School District superintendent; a special performance by Provencher; and a talk by Diane DeCola, author of "Inky," “The Adventures of Inky and Midnight," "Friends Forever" and "Butterfly."

"Since the first week of March is Read Across America, we tied our used book sale into that, and I planned this assembly with authors and other influential people to get the students excited about reading," Smith said. DeCola, who donated several sets of her chapter books to the school, will give away autographed books during the assembly, where she will discuss the process of writing, editing and publishing a book.

For more information about the Bradford Heights used book sale, interested readers may call Smith at 610-873-0317 or e-mail her at esposmith@gmail.com . Only cash and checks (with proper identification) will be accepted for payment at the used book sale.
