Engel Will Serve Mission

Michael Engel, York, the son of Ray and Jeannie Engel, left on April 1 to serve a mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints (LDS), York, Second Ward. Engel left for the Missionary Training Center, Provo, Utah, where he will spend six to eight weeks learning Spanish and teaching techniques.

Four of Engel's brothers have also served on missions that required them to learn another language. Troy Engel served in Venezuela, Chris Engle in Portugal, Dave Engel in San Diego, Calif, and Dan Engel in Chicago. The youngest brother, Matthew Engel, plans to serve a mission when he turns 19. The Engels also have a daughter, Lori, of St. George, Utah. All five of the Engel sons who have served on missions are also Eagle Scouts.

Michael Engel graduated from Dallastown Area High School in 2007. While in high school, he worked on his Eagle Scout rank, graduated from the four-year Early Morning Seminary sponsored by his church, and attained the Duty to God Award in the Young Men's Program. Since then, he has worked to earn money to support himself on his mission. In two years, when he completes his mission, he plans to enroll at Brigham Young University, Idaho, and major in computer science.

Mayor Beverly Scott of Dallastown attended Engel's farewell speech at the LDS church in York Township on March 30. Along with several friends, the mayor wished Engel luck.
