School Nurse Earns Honor

Good Shepherd Education Center in Camp Hill recently sent school nurse Irene Asken to the inaugural mid-state Healthcare Heroes awards program. One of six finalists for the Nurse of the Year Award, Asken was chosen from a group of professional nurses whose job performance is considered exemplary by patients and peers.

Asken has been a nurse since 1970 and dedicated to Good Shepherd School since 1991. Although her official part-time title is school nurse, she works much longer and does much more. She works in the office, answers the phone and the front door, and delivers messages and forgotten lunches. She also assists teachers with various activities. In addition, she coordinates the school yearbook and service clubs, serves as a science fair judge and publicity representative, and organizes events, assemblies, and luncheons.
