Country Fair Coming To Donegal Springs
By Susan E. Grubb
Donegal Springs Elementary School, 1055 Koser Road, Mount Joy, will hold its fifth annual Funfest at the school from 5 to 8 p.m. on Friday, May 9. This year’s event will feature a country fair theme, and it will be held rain or shine.
According to Tracey Stoviak, president of the school’s Parent Teacher Organization (PTO), the Funfest has been held each spring since the school opened in late 2003. “It’s a fun family event, not a fundraiser,” she said.
PTO vice president Janene Kling added that Funfest is open to the entire community. Admission to the event is free, and attendees may purchase tickets that can be used for food and games at the event.
Food available for purchase will include french fries and milkshakes, which are always a huge hit, said Stoviak. Other tasty offerings are hamburgers, hot dogs, snow cones, popcorn, cotton candy, ethnic foods, soda, water, orange drink, and lemonade.
Funfest will also offer a variety of games, including a hole-in-one golf game, dunk tank, balloon dart toss, and striker monkey (test of strength game). Small prizes will be awarded at all games.
Also featured will be a petting zoo with animals from the Brubaker farm and barrel tractor rides for small children.
Entertainment will include Tom Jolin, a one-man band, and perhaps the Donegal High School Rhythm Singers. Funfest will also feature an old-fashioned cake walk.
Again this year, the event will include a Chinese auction, which will provide attendees with the opportunity to bid on themed gift baskets that have been created by the classrooms with donated items from school families and local businesses. Among the themes of this year’s baskets are baby items, snacks, movie night, scrapbooking, gardening, and patriotic.
To bid on a particular gift basket, an individual will place a ticket in a collection basket beside the basket. Tickets will be drawn at 7:30 p.m. to determine the winners, and individuals need not be present to win.
Stoviak noted that students from Donegal High School, including members of Key Club and Student Council, will be on hand to assist with the event.
Stoviak and Kling encourage the public to look for the creative posters students created to advertise Funfest that will be displayed throughout the area.
