EAHS Plans Fourth Annual Senior Citizens’ Ball

By Susan E. Grubb

Members of the Elizabethtown Area High School Student Council invite all area senior citizens to attend the fourth annual Senior Citizens’ Ball. This year’s event, which has the theme of “Roarin’ ’20s,” will take place in the high school cafeteria, 600 E. High St., Elizabethtown, from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. on Friday, May 16. Admission is free, and the evening will feature food, dancing, and live music.

Student Council representatives McKenna Snyder and Anne Marie Vertucci are co-chairwomen of the event. Although this is the first time the two have worked together on the ball, they say they have been working together on projects since they were in seventh grade. They are excited about yet another opportunity to collaborate.

McKenna and Anne Marie said the school cafeteria staff members will cater the refreshments for the ball, which will include small sandwiches, cookies, fruit, punch, and coffee. Live music for listening and dancing entertainment will be provided by the high school’s Jazz Band, whose members include Hayden Gerhart, drums; Nick Reginella and Josh Ginder, trumpet; Weston Parrett, Nathan Ginder, and Seth Lamb, saxophone; Mason Brandt, trombone; and Drew Winey, string bass.

The cafeteria will be decorated to portray the 1920s era, and some students will dress in attire appropriate to the theme. Senior citizens are encouraged to dress for the theme if they wish to do so.

The Senior Citizens’ Ball was an annual tradition some years back. Student Council resumed the event three years ago and is once again making it an annual tradition.

Last year’s event drew about 60 seniors, and the most who ever attended was about 200 seniors. “We are hoping to see closer to that (higher number) this year,” said McKenna.

“The most exciting part of this is that we get to do something that (senior citizens in the community) can look forward to,” said McKenna. Anne Marie added that she hopes the event will be one that the seniors look forward to attending again next year.

Both young women enjoy visiting with area senior citizens. “They are very knowledgeable and can give us insight into things we didn’t know about,” said Anne Marie.

“They are so wise,” added McKenna.

No advance registration is required to attend the ball. “Just come,” said McKenna. For information, interested individuals may call Student Council adviser Joe Mack at 367-1533.

Student Council is accepting donations from the community to cover the cost of food and decorations. Interested readers may contact Mack at the previously mentioned phone number for information.
