Community Calendar

The Community Calendar is a weekly feature of the Community Courier.

Local clubs, civic organizations, nonprofit agencies, schools, etc., that would like to have events or meeting date information published, should contact the Community Courier in writing at least two weeks before the event.  No items will be accepted over the phone.

TOPS Plans

Meeting

TOPS (Take Off Pounds Sensibly), Chapter 839, Amityville, has changed its meeting location and will now meet on Tuesday evenings at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, 548 Old Swede Road (Route 662), Douglassville.  The change will take effect on Tuesday, May 6.   Weigh-in will start at 6:15 p.m., and the meeting will start at 7 p.m. For further information, call Linda at (610) 582-3323.

Support Group

Plans Meeting

People who have lost a spouse, child, family member or friend are invited to attend GriefShare, a support group offered by Rockville Mennonite Church, on Wednesday, May 7. The topic will be “Heaven.” The meeting will be held from 7 to 9 p.m., at F.A.M.I.L.I.E.S, located at 5001 W. Lincoln Highway, Parkesburg. Family Safety

Program Planned

Dignity Memorial, members of the Robeson Elementary School PTO and the Robeson MOMS Club will present “Escape School” on Wednesday. May 7, at 6:30 p.m. at the Robeson Elementary School gym, 801 White Bear Road, Robeson Township.  The program, which is open to the public, will address topics such as keeping your children safe, and explaining how to differentiate between good and bad strangers.

An ice cream social will be held following the program.  Ice cream will be provided; each family is asked to bring a favorite topping to share. 

Church Plans

Ham Dinner

A baked ham dinner and baked goods sale will be held at St. John’s Lutheran Church, 1035 Old River Road, Gibraltar, on Friday, May 9, from 4:30 to 7 p.m.  The dinner will be presented by the Men of St. John’s, while the baked goods will be prepared by the Women of St. John’s.

A fee will be charged for dinner. Children under age 4 will be admitted free of charge. Proceeds will benefit St. John’s building projects. 

Garden Club

Slates Plant Sale

The Elverson Garden Club will have a plant sale on Saturday May 10, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. at the Mill property in Morgantown.  The sale will include plants donated from member gardens, as well as annuals,  Mother's Day baskets and orchids.

Proceeds will fund local scholarships and the club's annual flower show. The event will take place at the Mill property on Route 23, east of Route 10 South. For more information or directions, call Vanessa Peterson at (610) 913-8698.

A Community Breakfast will be held at Living God Church, Route 322, Honey Brook, on Saturday, May 10, from 8 to 10 a.m. The menu will include scrambled eggs, sausage, home fries, toast, orange juice, coffee and milk.  A fee will be charged per person. Club Plans Meeting

The Honey Brook Women’s Club will meet on Wednesday, May 14, at 7 p.m. at Honey Brook Presbyterian Church. Sue Welsh will present a program on her travels to Ireland and Scotland. Everyone is welcome.

Senior Citizens

Plan Meeting

Honey Brook Senior Citizens will meet on Thursday, May 8, at 11:45 a.m. at the Honey Brook Presbyterian Church. The meeting will feature the election of officers and a program on reverse mortgages presented by a representative from a local bank. Each person is asked to bring a covered dish to share. All senior citizens are welcome to attend.

MOMS Club

To Meet

The MOMS Club of Robeson Township will meet on Friday, May 9, 9:30 a.m. at Robeson Lutheran Church.  The meeting is open to members as well as non-members.  The MOMS Club is a nonprofit organization for at-home mothers and their children living in Southern Berks County, including moms living in all of Robeson, Brecknock (of Berks County) and Caernarvon (of Berks County) townships and parts of Union townships. Victorian Tea

The Women of Joanna will present their second Victorian Tea at Joanna Furnace on Saturday, May 10, at 2 p.m. The event will be hosted by the ironmaster’s wife, “Jennie Grubb Smith,” and her sister “Miss Daisy.”  In addition to tea and punch, finger sandwiches, scones, tea cakes, nuts, and assorted fruits will be served, while the two sisters recount the happenings around the furnace in the 1870s.

A fee will be charged, and space is limited.  For  reservations or more information, call Nancy at (610) 404-7278. Joanna Furnace is located along Route 10 about 2.5 miles north of Morgantown. Attendees may  access the site from Furnace Road.

Flea Market

St. Peter United Church of Christ, Route 23, Knauertown, will hold a flea market on Saturday, May 10, from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m.  A donation will be required for an outdoor space.  Breakfast and lunch will be available. All are welcome.
