Stamp Out Hunger Set
On Saturday, May 10, letter carriers will again help to stamp out hunger across America with help from residents. Now in its 16th year, the Stamp Out Hunger campaign is the nation's largest single-day food drive.
Since the inception of the drive, letter carriers have collected more than 836 million pounds of food from postal customers. Donations are then delivered to community food banks, pantries, and shelters.
To help with this effort, readers may leave a sturdy bag containing nonperishable foods such as canned soups, canned vegetables, pasta, rice, or cereal next to their mailboxes prior to the time of regular mail delivery on May 10. Food items should be in nonbreakable containers such as boxes or cans. The letter carrier will collect the items and deliver them to a local food bank.
According to America's Second Harvest, the nation's food bank network, more than 35 million people are food-insecure, hungry, or at risk of hunger. Approximately one in four people in a soup kitchen line is a child.
A national soup company will kick off the effort by donating one million pounds of food to food banks across the country.
For more information about the Stamp Out Hunger effort in the community, readers may talk to their letter carriers, call or visit the local post office, or visit www.helpstampouthunger.com.
