Julia Morelli Earns Award

On April 22, the Afternoon Music Club held its 2008 scholarship auditions at the Community Music School, Trappe. Seven local high school seniors who plan to pursue music careers after graduation vied for a $1,500 award. Julia Morelli won the award by performing cello solos before a board of judges from the club.

Julia was home-schooled for her senior year with a dual enrollment at Perkiomen Valley High School and Montgomery County Community College online. She will graduate from Perkiomen Valley High School in June.

Julia, who has studied the cello for 10 years, currently with teacher Cassia Harvey, received an advanced study scholarship at the Settlement Music School of Philadelphia, where she plays with the Trowbridge Chamber Orchestra. She has played with the Delaware County Youth Orchestra and the Philadelphia Youth Orchestra, assists beginners at the Cheltenham Youth Orchestra, and gives private cello lessons. She has been accepted at the Indiana University Jacobs School of Music, Bloomington, Ind., where she plans to study orchestral or chamber performance, as well as teaching and solo work.

On May 20, Julia and her parents will be guests of honor at the scholarship luncheon at the Community Music School. Julia will receive her scholarship award and play for the club at a concert at 1 p.m.

Each year, the Afternoon Music Club, which was founded in 1945, presents a scholarship to a graduating high school senior who plans to major in music education or music performance. The club also presents six concerts each year on the third Tuesday of September, October, November, March, April, and May. New members are always welcome to join. Readers may visit www.afternoonmusicclub.org for details about the year’s concerts, as well as membership information.
